IMPORTANT INFORMATION

All Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificates issued after 1st January 2001 are valid for a five year period from the date of issue. The two day SMSTS refresher course will enable current SMSTS certificate holders to renew their qualification, however this course can only be attended by current and valid SMSTS certificate holders. However, you can undertake the refresher course within 6 months either side of your SMSTS pass date.

The SMSTS Refresher course is designed to ensure that personnel maintain and up-date their current health and safety knowledge. The SMSTS refresher course covers changes to legislation, approved codes of practice and best working practice within the industry.

Individuals wishing to renew their SMSTS certificate must provide a copy of the original five-day SMSTS course certificate. Details of the course venue and the date of the course should also be provided if known. Only those individuals who have passed the five day SMSTS course and provided evidence of this will be eligible to take the two day refresher course.

This industry-recognised training course is ideal for all companies involved in construction – site clearance, ground and road works, building, assembly, civil engineering, installation, maintenance, decorating or demolition.

SMSTS Re-Certification Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, candidates will be able to:

  • Appreciate recent developments in construction legislation accident causes, costs and reasons for prevention
  • Understand the legal system, relevant legislation, Approved Codes of Practice, Guidance Notes Codes of Practice and Case Law
  • Conduct risk assessments
  • Monitor health and safety performance
  • Understand best practice in the management of sub-contractors
  • Disseminate information to operatives and sub-contractors.

Successful candidates will be awarded the CITB Site Management Safety Training Certificate.

Aims and Objectives

To give an understanding of delegates’ responsibilities and accountability for site safety, health and welfare and current health and safety legislation including risk assessment.

This course is designed to allow delegates to maintain and update their current health and safety knowledge. The course fee includes the ConstructionSkills publication Construction Site Safety – Health, Safety and Environmental Information Manual (GE700) as well as other material.

Possession of the SMSTS qualification is listed in Appendix 4 of the Approved Code of Practice for the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations L144 as an example of the evidence a site manager could use to demonstrate meeting the required standard.

Course Content

The course covers The Health & Safety at Work Act and other regulations and requirements relevant to the construction industry, including;

  • Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Site set up
  • CDM Regulations 2007
  • Risk Assessment/Method statements
  • Scaffolding/Electricity/Excavations
  • Demolition/Confined Spaces
  • Recent changes in accepted working practices

Handout: Each candidate receives copies of two CITB documents, XA 6 course workbook and 2 x GE 700 reference manuals.

Assessment:

This is determined by reaching a minimum level of achievement against four criteria:

  • Full attendance of the day course sessions
  • Performance in each of the core exercises
  • An overall review by the course tutor
  • A pass mark in the 25 question multi-choice paper
