Airline cabin crew told a chilly passenger they couldn’t GIVE her a blanket because of health and safety reasons… but they would SELL her one for a fiver.
A stewardess explained to stunned Zoe Hammond that “strict rules” stopped them from handing out blankets during the night-time flight. But if she handed over £5 she could have one — along with an eye mask and a blow-up pillow.
Furious Zoe, 26, complained to the Health and Safety Executive. It ruled against Monarch Airlines, calling the blanket rule “a cover-up for poor customer service and/or a commercial decision”.
The potty policy is one of the worst examples yet uncovered by The Sun in our “Non-Sense” campaign against clipboard killjoys. And Employment Minister Chris Grayling backed The Sun last night, saying: “Words fail me when I hear such an obviously absurd excuse.”
Zoe, a safety manager for a window company, was one of several passengers who felt cold because of the air conditioning during the four-hour flight from Turkey to Birmingham. She said: “The stewardess didn’t elaborate on what threat the blankets posed to health and safety. “I knew it didn’t add up, but I was tired so I just paid. As soon as you hear health and safety, you tend to back away.”
