Dave said "I would like to thank my assessor Martyn Grant for his positivity shown toward me and his very timely returned remarks and up dates which was of great help. As Richard Ball said yesterday (at the presentation) when the results bar turns ‘GREEN’ it is a great lift as is the ‘%’ completed".

Dave is a serving Captain in the British Army stationed in Colchester Garrison. He holds the responsibility for the provision of advice guidance and practical support in health, safety and environmental management. The army units which fall within his area of responsibility include 16 Air Assault Brigade, several units and personnel are actually deployed on operations around the world.

CRS Candidate of the Year 2014 – NEBOSH General Certificate – Jonathan Lewis

Ros Stacey UK Sales Director for CRS presented Jonathan Lewis from the Home Office – Border Force Maritime and Aviation Operations with the their NEBOSH Student of the Year Award 2014 at a special event on Friday 13th June at Sahara Force India – Silverstone the home of Formula One racing.

Jonathan who is a Fleet Superintendent – Engineering, with the Home Office Border Force Maritime and Aviation Operations said “I became a Customs Officer in 1985, joining their fleet of patrol boats called Cutters as an Engineer. I was promoted to Chief Engineer some 20 years ago, and have been lucky enough to have one of the best jobs in the world –the excitement and satisfaction of intercepting and arresting drug smugglers is unbelievable.

Two years ago, I picked up a shore based opportunity as the Fleet superintendent –Engineering and took on the responsibility as Lead auditor of our Safety management system.

I am currently re-writing the Branch risk assessment, which is a huge project as the roles range from routine Galley work to assessing how we keep our Officers safe when dealing with criminals determined to bypass our maritime border controls.

The NEBOSH qualification has given added authority to my submissions, as well as credibility when investigating incidents and the subsequent reports or statements. It gave me the confidence to challenge a very expensive but totally inaccurate report by a “Sound Analyst” which resulted in a rewrite and reduced its negative impact.

The award was presented by Bev White, Business Manager for City & Guilds to our winner Kathy Harrison. Kathy a Health & Safety specialist currently employed by CooperVison Manufacturing UK in Hampshire.

Kathy said “The course took longer than I was expecting mainly down to the fact that my laptop failed and I lost all of my course work, which I did not back-up, (a big learning experience).” Kathy then went on to say “I spoke to Richard my assessor who encouraged me to carry on as he said I was more than capable of completing the course.” Kathy used the ‘Learning Assistant’ web based portal to submit her work to her assessor. She says “I had almost finished my course work when the new web-based portal system – Learning Assistant was introduced – I decided to opt into this system. I found it very user friendly and it was much easier storing all my supporting evidence in this way, no more large heavy folders. The system made it much easier to be in contact with my assessor too. I sent an email direct via the portal system and he responded usually the same day”.

Finally Kathy said “my overall experience has been a positive one and I am pleased for the support and encouragement given by CRS to help me further my career development”.

McCain Foods agreed to sponsor me through my training, CRS came recommended to me by a colleague and when I researched into CRS saw that they offer a Sure Pass Promise, so that if I failed any of the course exams and could retake the course or just the exams again free of charge with the exception of paying for the NEBOSH exam fee/s, although I was determined I was not going to fail it was nice to have the reassurance of the CRS “Sure Pass Promise”. Stuart Clarke was my tutor for the course he was a great guy and made the course a lot of fun”. James finished by adding “After attending the course it has been a great benefit and now I feel I can challenge our HSE policy with confidence and knowledge”.

As a result of the qualification I was successful in a promotion process and I am now a Health and Safety Advisor for the same Home Office organisation”.

To see Dave collect his award was his wife Valerie and two sons David & Jack.
