Operational & Business Development
Ian F. Cliffen,
Operations Director joined CRS in June 2010. Ian has recently returned to the UK after working overseas for the last twenty years. He has managed companies in the Middle and Far East, and in Sri Lanka; and comes from a background in business and management consultancy. He is an experienced manager and well qualified to lead CRS into its next level of development and expansion. CRS will benefit from his IT and back office systems management skills to seek improved efficiency and cost savings. In his spare time, Ian is often found programming computer systems and building new computers for friends and family.
Ros Stacey,
UK Sales Director. Ros has nearly 30 years experience in Sales, Marketing and Business Development, she thrives on the challenge of taking businesses to the “next level” Over 19 years in the training business working with Blue Chip companies, local Authorities, and private sector promoting and selling training, she has valuable skills and experience in working with agents.. Also worked on product development and operations. Previously set up and ran the JCB Training Centre producing a turnover of over 1 million. She has over 25 years man management and recruitment experience. Ros took over a Property Letting Company and took it to the next level increasing the property portfolio from 50 Managed properties to over 650. More recently Ros has been working for one on the largest charities as Training Business Development Manager. Ros is a self confessed workaholic but in her spare time likes to work out at the gym and enjoys foreign holidays.
Susan Asbury,
Finance and Administration Manager. Following her success in business studies qualifications, Susan’s career commenced in sales administration, and progressed into sales, marketing and operations management (including having set up and run her own small business). Prior to joining CRS, Susan spent twenty years managing key business channels for global corporate organisations in the UK and Europe; most recently 3M plc. With strong skill sets in business development and administration, negotiation, finance, and sales and marketing, she now takes care of all our administration and finance, ensuring everything runs smoothly for both CRS and its clients. In her spare time, Susan is dedicated to her human and feline family, enjoys holidays and travel, and plays the piano.

Sales Executive. Ian joins CRS with 20 years experience in the Commercial Insurance industry covering a wide and diverse client range, He has worked for large provincial brokers and multinationals. He spent 5 years running his own business. Ian has a strong background in solution based sales and in his spare time enjoys watching football and training his son to become a top sprinter

Stephen Asbury MBA (Distinction) FIEMA CEnv CFIOSH,
Managing Director, has almost thirty years of risk management experience gained in consultancy and the London insurance market. He has worked in over 50 countries with a broad variety of blue chip employers and clients undertaking more than 800 OHS&E management system implementations and audits. Stephen is a Chartered Fellow of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, a Professional Member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, an IRCA OH&S Lead Auditor, and an IEMA Principal Environmental Auditor. He is a Chartered Environmentalist, and holds an MBA with Distinction. Stephen was a founder member of CRS, and he is currently a member of the IOSH Council of Management, and Chair of its Professional Ethics Committee. He is the author of recent best-selling books HSEQ Audits – A Risk Based Approach and Do the Right Thing, and a regular contributor to HSE journals and conferences. In his spare time, Stephen is a DiveMaster and enjoys theatre and F1.
Richard Ball PG Dip BSc(Hons) CMIOSH MIEMA,
Head of Environment, leads our range of Environmental Consultancy and Training. He has a wide range of experience of implementing management systems, auditing and competency & training programme development with over 10 years’ experience across the public and private sectors, in Health, Safety and Environmental disciplines. He also works with a range of awarding bodies developing the CIEH’s Environmental Protection qualifications, and is co-author of their trainers notes and delegates course books ‘Environmental Principles and Best Practice’ and ‘ Environmental Management’. He has also lead the development of CRS’S - Applied route to Associate and Full Membership of IEMA, and IOSH’S CPD course on Corporate Social Responsibility. Richard is the co-author of IOSH’s 'Do the Right Thing'. Out of work he enjoys running and spending time with his family.
Stewart Clarke (CMIOSH, CMCIPD), Consultant who has a vast amount experience in the training, development and motivation of staff at all levels within a wide range of organisations. He is a chartered member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH) and a Chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CMCIPD). With a background in engineering, and more than 20 years of teaching experience, Stewart has also developed and presented Train the Trainer and Presentation Skills courses. In addition to delivering NEBOSH, IOSH and CIEH Health and Safety courses, Stewart is accomplished in the role of Health and Safety Advisor and his requisite skills include Accident Investigator, Risk Assessor, Driving Assessor, Health and Safety Auditor and NVQ Assessor. His outside interests include travelling where he has visited Australia, Hawaii and Nashville Tennessee.
Matt Reeves (GradIOSH),
has recently joined CRS after being head of a H&S consultancy and training division for an insurance brokers. Duties included developing and implementing H&S management systems to a wide range of clients ensuring compliance with H&S Legislation and insurers standards. Prior to this Matt spent 14 years as a serving member of the Royal Navy where he gained experience of H&S Law and practices. Outside interests include travelling, watching / playing sport, running and spending time with his young family.
Andrew Arkinstall (CMIOSH Dip2OSH), Senior Tutor, and is a key person in our NEBOSH Certificate and NVQ programmes. Previously, he has worked in the retail and leisure sectors, progressing into the training sector and has gained a vast amount of experience and knowledge in health and safety issues. Clients include both large manufacturing companies and SMEs in the food, manufacturing, retail, construction, automotive, policing and higher education sectors. Andrew is a City and Guilds NVQ assessor and Internal Verifier with vast experience in delivering Health and Safety, Retail, Customer Service and Business Administration qualifications up to level 5. In his spare time Andrew enjoys shopping, golf and travel and looking after his son.
Chris Dougherty (GradIOSH MIfL), Chris has had a varied career in engineering disciplines. He started in agricultural engineering in Northern Ireland, spent 23 years in the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineer. Since 1995 he has worked as a Health and Safety Trainer/ Consultant working with the Petrochemical Industry, Food and many different contractor groups delivering a wide variety of training for NEBOSH, IOSH, CIEH and Industry Specific courses He is an enthusiastic and energetic Health and Safety Professional, currently a member of IOSH at Graduate Level His interest and hobbies include DIY, Golf, Jet Skiing
Kerry Edwards (BSc (Hons), CMIOSH, MIIRSM, RGN), has over 18 years experience in Occupational Safety & Health covering large businesses e.g. Vehicle Manufacturing, Design & Engineering and construction as well as SME’s. Kerry joined CRS in December 2005 as an NVQ Assessor, aiming to help others in the field of occupational safety and health to develop a dynamic approach in their workplaces. Kerry has developed and implemented Health & Safety management systems in many organisations with her extensive knowledge of legislation and potential civil and criminal liabilities. Kerry enjoys riding, wildlife protection, travelling and reading.
John Leivers (CMIOSH), is a mechanical engineer and a health and safety practitioner with a background in the power generation industry. He has worked with CRS since 1999. John specialises in training, particularly on our NVQ programme, and in the delivery of Safety Passports. He is also an RTITB Forklift Truck Instructor. In his spare time, John plays squash and is interested in hill walking and photography.
John Beresford (CMIOSH), joined CRS in 2005 as an NVQ Assessor. He has almost 30 years experience in health and safety, and for 25 years worked for a leading brewing and leisure company. During his time as Group Safety Adviser / Company Safety Manager he gained a wide experience of not only food and drink manufacturing and distribution, but also of the retail, leisure and hotel sectors. John has been a member of several national health and safety working parties including those of the British Beer and Pub Association and British Soft Drinks Association. He also holds the Institute of Acoustics Certificate in Workplace Noise Assessment. John is a family man and in his spare time he enjoys photography, music, walking and travel.
Paul Bradbury BSc (Hons), DMS, Dip2OSH, CSPA, CMIOSH, MRIPH, has over eighteen years experience in this sector. He is a Chartered Member of IOSH and a qualified microbiologist. He has experience in working for large multi - site retail organisations (food and non-food), manufacturing and the construction industry. As a trainer, Paul delivers NEBOSH, IOSH and CIEH courses. Paul is also an NVQ assessor. Paul has an unusual hobby outside work as he likes to build, fly planes and helicopters.
Jackie Holder (CMIOSH),
…is a specialist NVQ mentor and assessor. A Chartered Member of IOSH, she has over 15 years experience in Occupational Safety and Health. Jackie served 30 years in the Police, latterly as Head of Health and Safety at Thames Valley Police prior to retiring in 2006. Jackie has gained extensive experience in training and coaching. She trained police recruits at a regional training centre and later, as a Director of Studies, inducted and developed trainers at national level. She believes in a pragmatic and co-operative approach to both health and safety and NVQ Assessing and takes great satisfaction from seeing others achieve their goals. Jackie hails from the North West but lives in Oxfordshire. She has 2 boys aged fourteen and nineteen, the eldest studying Biology at University. The family have a bespoke built narrow boat and she enjoys spending time on the boat, family trips to watch Leicester Tigers, developing property, gardening, the theatre, and walking and training their black labrador dog.
Bryan Weatherill BSc Hons. CMIOSH. FCIEA. PGCE., He says that health and safety has been part of the his world of work since his first day as an apprentice on the railway. With this background in engineering he moved into production and manufacturing engineering. After training to achieve qualified teacher status went into Lecturing at North Devon College. Whilst there achieved the NEBOSH Diploma and CMIOSH, then building up the Health and Safety Unit and working as College Health and Safety Adviser. Recognition as a Senior Lecturer and Advanced Practitioner proved a high point of his career. Has tutored and managed NEBOSH, CIEH and bespoke courses for circa 15 years. Also, taught as an Associate Lecturer for the University of Plymouth on their Engineering Degree programmes, specialising in the elements of health and safety, robotics, fluid power and engineering management. Has been a NEBOSH Examiner at both Certificate and Diploma levels for a number of years, latterly working as a Standards Officer in their offices.
Rodger Hope BSc (Hons), MSc, PgDip, CMIOSH, MIIRSM,
has over 16 years experience of safety, health and environmental advisory and management roles in the public and private sectors. He has worked in research and development, manufacturing, for a large unitary Local Authority, and for 10 years in the construction industry with some of the county's largest contractors. He has extensive experience within the safety, health and environmental discipline of training course development and delivery, has been heavily involved in behavioural change programmes within the construction industry, and also has many year's experience of asbestos management. In addition to the above he is skilled in risk assessment, developing safe systems of work and planning safe delivery of large construction projects. In his spare time he enjoys sailing and boat maintenance, walking, playing tennis, and has recently started to learn sub-aqua diving and gliding.
Andy Newborough (MSc CMIOSH MIIRSM TIFireE),
Andy has a wealth of 'line' management experience in fast moving customer facing environments and has over 17 years experience of health and safety consultancy, course design and delivery. Andy has extensive knowledge of safety in both the public and private sectors having held posts in retail, for a city financial institution and as Head of Safety for a London Borough. Andy holds a Masters degree in Health & Safety Management, is a Chartered Safety Practitioner and also holds membership of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management and the Institution of Fire Engineers, which brings a very practical and robust approach to managing health and safety in the workplace.
Andy has worked extensively with a number of County, District and London Borough councils, ALMOs, a Not-for-Profit organisation responsible for running a London borough's education services and the police service, as well as many private sector organisations including well known high street names. In his spare time, Andy supports his two sons in their junior football and rugby careers, is himself a qualified rugby union referee, and enjoys a busy family and social life.
Mike Light BSc(hons) CMIOSH MCIEH,
Mike has over 20 years’ experience in Risk Management within the public and private sectors including construction, port and maritime logistics, manufacturing, facilities and leisure management, retail and National Charities.
David Whitelegg GradIOSH MIEMA CIWM CEnv,
David has over 13 years experience in environmental, health and safety management and training. He has significant operational experience within waste management having run one of the largest landfill sites in Western Europe where he was responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant Health, Safety and Environmental Legislation.
Naomi Warr BSc (Hons) AIEMA EnvDipNEBOSH,
has over 12 years experience in Environmental Management. Starting her career in a research lab, she then moved into infrastructure where she held the role of Group Environmental Manager in a select number of large Construction PLCs, dealing with roads, utilities, mechanical and electrical, building, rail, gas, sewage treatment, waste and quarry sectors. In 2009 Naomi branched out on her own as an independent consultant and expanded her experience into other business sectors such as manufacture, distribution and food as well as continuing in infrastructure. As well as general advisory and auditing works, Naomi has also compiled and implemented management systems for a number of businesses and sectors. In her spare time Naomi competes in long distance endurance triathlon competitions and helps with the construction and development of the family home incorporating environmental and sustainable technologies and methods where practicable.
Marilyn Bond B.A. CMIOSH, AIEMA, MIIRSM,
Marilyn first became involved in Health and Safety whilst working as a senior administrator for Warwickshire Constabulary. Following the inclusion of the police service within the health and safety legislation, she was instrumental in promoting health and safety to the organisation, and training staff as part of her then role. Marilyn has been a trainer for 13 years. Her portfolio of expertise ranges from one day introduction courses, Risk Assessment courses, Senior Executive training and on to Diploma level, for a variety of companies. Marilyn has extensive experience in conducting on-site risk assessments and evaluations. She is also a Manual Handling Trainer. Her belief is that a practical application of health and safety will aid companies to achieve business goals whilst promoting a safe and healthy working environment. In her spare time form Marilyn is an avid Francophile, a keen golfer and enjoys walking her Labrador, Hugo.
Jonathan Backhouse MA BA(Hons) DipNEBOSH EnvDipNEBOSH CertEd AIEMA GradIOSH FIfL QTLS,
Jonathan is an occupational safety and health practitioner, qualified teacher and author; with over ten years of experience in consultancy, training and course development; working in the UK, Africa and USA.
Jonathan has gained status of Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS); is a NEBOSH/CIEH examiner and has written Essential Study Skills for Health and Safety: Taylor and Francis, due for publication in May 2013.
He is passionate about empowering and developing the skills of others, which is evident in the high pass rates his NEBOSH students achieve: students’ (first time) pass rates for NEBOSH General Certificate average over 85 per cent for the exams, and over 90 per cent for the practical element. Jonathan acquired occupational experience by spending four years in engineering management where he implemented an integrated Safety, Health and Environmental Management System. He is an executive member of IOSH Tees Branch.In his spare time he enjoys walking, reading and playing backgammon and other board games.
Jonathan Woodhouse BSc(hons) CMIOSH MCIEH,
began his occupational safety career in enforcement before moving into the private sector, addressing the technical and legal support needs of clients within manufacturing, distribution, leisure and retail industries. He has worked extensively with businesses that wish to improve management control in areas such as risk assessment and accident loss management. His auditing experience covers a wide range of UK, European and Middle Eastern manufacturing sites and he has provided consultancy assistance in development of management systems for businesses wishing to progress to inspected status against third party standards. He takes an enthusiastic approach to training, believing that safety is anything but a dull topic, and that everyone, in whatever position they hold within an organisation, can exercise some influence on safety outcomes. He has wide experience of the development and delivery of occupational safety training ranging from bespoke in-company material through to IOSH and NEBOSH. Jonathan balances his enthusiasm for his work with a love of mountain walking, cycling and skiing and has the good fortune to be able to regularly indulge at least some of this, living on the edge of the Peak District National Park.
Phillip Duckett CMIOSH,
Phillip has a background in building and general engineering and has held senior management positions in the plant and machinery installation business. He has over ten years' experience in health and safety and Is a Chartered Member of the IOSH. Phillip has experience of working in the pharmaceutical, automotive, food and beverage military supply, aircraft manufacture and general engineering operations. He has carried out the role as principal contractor for large blue chip companies such as Rolls Royce, Crown Cork and Seal, Toyota, UPM Kymmenne, Bae land systems, Michelin Tyres and Nissan. This has been acquired by running projects in South America, North Africa and Europe. Phillip has constructed and delivered training courses to all sectors of business. He prides himself on helping and encouraging clients to achieve a high standard of health and safety in their organizations. Phillip supports his eldest son in the Steelers lacrosse team and managed the Under 14 team. He is an active participant of his local English Karate Federation club.
